Nigeria is Home to Africa’s Largest Fishing Festival!

Hello Reader,

Let’s talk about the very famous Argungu Fishing Festival in Kebbi State, Northern Nigeria. The name of this festival is simply derived from the name of the town in which it takes place (Argungu).

Local Fishermen Competing in the Festival

The annual event takes place between February and March, so this is the right time to start planning. The festival marks the commencement of the fishing season in Kebbi State, and has been celebrated since 1934. Indeed it is one of the oldest festivals in Nigeria and definitely the oldest of its kind in Africa.

Thousands of fishermen from all over Nigeria (and neighboring countries) travel to this beautiful town to attend the festival every year, adding splendor and diversity to the event.

The fishermen compete against each other to catch the largest fish (bare-handed), for a cash reward.

Politically, this festival also marks the end of centuries-old hostilities between the Kebbi Kingdom and Sokoto

It’s time to weigh the largest fish caught

Bare-Handed Fishing (Amazing isn’t it?)

Even an Oyibo (white man) decided to take part

If you wish to attend this event in 2024, kindly leave your email in the comment section and I shall contact you for assistance!

I hope you will return to read my next blog and another tourist location in my beautiful country, Nigeria!
